My first time in first grade.

Dear diary,

Two years ago I finished the Teacher´s school and I started to work in a public elementary school near from home. It is located in Monterrey, Mexico in an urban area. The first year I taught in fourth grade, my students were around 9 and 10 years old. The second year I taught sixth grade to kids around 11 and 12 years old. And for the first time I´m teaching first grade. I hadn´t have experience with very young kids, I must confess I was very nervous. As a teacher of high grades I used to work a lot with the order and discipline and I had always used self-analysis to convince students to do things correct, but this time I didn´t know what to expect from kids of 5 or 6 years old.

So, the first week started and everything was scary for me. Children didn´t have idea about order or discipline. They didn´t know how to take the pencil or use a notebook and they were falling from the chair all the time because they were very small and didn´t know how to sit well. Working with glue stick was a disaster, they broke it or closed with the glue out of the tube. I had to teach them all these things, also how to choose the correct sheet to write in the notebook and manage toilet paper and liquid soap. They got tired very quickly and were constantly asking about time to go home. Fortunately, just one kid cried.

At first I doubted about having studied the right profession. I didn´t know how I was going to teach these sweet scary little kids. I just took a breath and did my best. I was positively surprised when I noticed how intelligent and smart they can be. I learned to sing and dance to say hello at the beginning of the day and to say goodbye. I learned to be very patient and to speak more gently, to make simple draws in the blackbord and to clean tears, vomit and all kind of spots. Now I tie almost ten shoelaces per day, write notes for tooth mouse (tooth fairy) and call Santa Claus when somebody is not working.

I am currently a proud first grade teacher and I feel truly a teacher. My students are learning to read, count, add and subtract. And they are doing it in a healthy learning environment. My students don´t want to miss class even if they are sick, at least is what some parents said. As far as I´m concerned I enjoy every day in my classroom with my group.

  2. Well, like I was saying the other day... I really admire you for doing all of that because gurl... I COULD NEVER! I think you are a really brave person for carrying this challenge everyday and I'm sure you are doing your best. If you ever doubt again that you are not in the right profession just tryto think about the good atuff and all of the things your students have accomplished. We all have those days.
It was really good to know about what you deal with everyday and just keep up the good work!
    Bye Ana!

  5. I agree being a teacher in elementary school requires preparation, willing to serve kids, including them in the learning activities, and so online.
Congratulations for your job, passion in teaching, as well as teaching from the heart.

  7. Ana, reading what you shared it made me remember my first time working in Kindergarten, at the beginning I couldn´t handle it but then I didn´t realize but I fell in love with teaching little kids, they were in Preschool 2 and they were 4 years old only. And I kept teaching in this educative level for 6 years, of course that happened a long, long time ago, but I want to thank you for sharing your experience with us, I loved it.

  8. Ana I can really see the effort you put forth to teach the little ones, to be honest in the past I didn't like to teach those grades, because of how difficult it is gaining the respect and attention, but now with your experiences I feel encourged to do more for th first graders and second graders

  9. That's so sweet, it's my first year to working with kids, but on the grades that you worked before, and I feel you, I never choose to work with kids because I thought that it would be dificult (specially when the progress you get, it gous backwards when the parents don't comit with their kids), but I've been enjoying the experience of teaching to them and learning from them too.

  10. Im happy for you that you really enjoy what you're doing. I've never worked with first grade but I guess It's a difficult work because it's the basement, if they learn it right on first grade they will be great later. Keep going Ana, have a nice day :)

  11. 1st grader are the best!!! they are so innocent, and cute, but they didn't know a lot of things about school, and teachers must start from the very beginning, and that may be difficult and exhausting. I'm glad that you have achieved so many things in a so little time, and that requires a lot of your commitment.
Sometimes we believe that teachers teach students when it's the opposite.

  12. Ana congratulations! at least you survived, believe me I know a teacher that she seems to be having a real hard time in her classroom the kids are literal monsters, the other day one of them jumped out of the school and the teacher had to go after him and other two teachers including the principal. Can you believe that of a first grader? thank God the boy´s grandma brought him back after a few minutes. As for me I like first grade better than sixth.
Love your kids as if they were your own blessings.

  15. Hi!Ana, I know it is a very stressful experience. But interesting because with this we can become real empathetic. And have the opportunity to grow. I had lived that experience too. I would always think of taking our own pace, because is the only way oneself starts to get in touch with owns e reallity. Always to keep trying is the best option, but finding different ways or opptions and I´m sure it´s only circumstances. For sure you are an excellent teacher. Do not forget that every child has a story, a soul and a hope. Your definitlely righ. We cannot know if there´s sombody taking real care for this kids...
